The family shown herein for James Barnes and Catherine Barkley is based on Moffat's listing of the marriage of Catherine Barkley, daughter of William and Sarah (Crawford) Barkley, to James Barnes. The name Catherine "Barkley" does not appear in any of the references, only Catherine Barnes. Further, birthdates were originally estimated from other data (primarily Moffat) and searches made for James and Catherine Barnes of appropriate ages. At this time, there is no further basis that this family is the family mentioned by Moffat.
James Barnes apparently spent his life as a farmer as he is so listed in 18501231, 18601232 and 18701233. In 18801246, wife Catherine is listed as widowed. He died at the age840 of 69y 7m 24d, from which his birth date is calculated.
In 1875, Catherine is living with son William B Barnes, and her children Sarah, Margaret and Mary. In 1880, she is head of household with her children Sarah, William and Mary living with her. Catherine died840 in 1884 at the age840 of 75y 4m 9d, from which her birthdate is calculated.

Gordon's birthdate is calculated from his age at death: 51y 5m 11d.
Child 3. Sarah
Sarah apparently never married. She lived in Crawford her whole life, living variously with her parents and siblings over the years. She died840 in 1905 at the age840 of 68y 5m 3d. Her obituary5983 has her as the daughter of James Barnes, deceased, and the sister of William and Gordon Barnes. Her death is stated as Sunday, Sept. 17, at Pine Bush. Perhaps the Sept 19 date is for her burial.
Child 6. Mary
Mary apparently never married. She died at the age840 of 35y 9d, from which her birthdate is calculated.
