As the 1900 census1666 lists Joseph and Elizabeth as married 20 years, that implies Elizabeth was his second wife. Headstone inscriptions imply Joseph's first wife was Mary. As a result, it is assumed that Mary, rather than Elizabeth, was the mother of Joseph's children as listed in 18801665. In addition, Elizabeth's headstone (which reads "ELIZABETH A. WIFE OF ..", sinking into ground) is located next to Joseph's headstone. Joseph's headstone reads "J. GLASPIE BARKLEY 1826 - 1907," the source of his middle name.
A family monument in Franklin Cem., Franklin, MI, reads (from the image): "MARY / Wife of / Joseph G Barkley / Died / Mar 12 1879 / Aged 49 yrs 8 mos 27 ds." Though an individual headstone close to that monument has Mary's birth and death as 1830 and 1879, her birthdate herein is as calculated from her age at death.
The source of Mary's maiden name is the will (Michgian Wills and Probate, www.ancestry.com) of Mary Barkley, wife of Joseph G Barkley. Her will specifies a bequest of $1000 to "my niece Roselle A Kyle daughter of Maria Kyle," to be paid to her when she became 18 years old. The petition for probate records, submitted by Joseph G Barkley, "husband" of Mary Barkley, lists as interested persons in Mary's estate: Samuel Beatty, James Beatty, and Maria Kyle, all of Bloomfield, "brothers and sisters of said deceased & Roselle A Kyle, Birmingham, Mich."
Mary's parents are assumed from the 1850 census1283 for Bloomfield, MI. The household of Samuel Beaty(sic) is comprised of: Elizabeth, age 40, b Ireland; James, age 24, b NY; Mary, age 22, b NY; Marie (or Maria or Mariet?), age 17, b Mich; Margaret, age 11, b Mich, and Samuel, age 5, b Mich. The Mary of that record is assumed to be the Mary Beatty of this profile due to the coincidence of the location, Mary's birth year, and the names of children, likely the siblings mentioned in her probate records.
