Fred and Mabel (listed last name May after her adoption by Isaac and Mary May) were married by S P Wilder, Clergyman, North Brookfield.

Fred was the son of a Master Mariner, Frederick A Harding, and Helena F Harding. His mother's maiden name was also Harding. Fred was a butcher, meat cutter and manager of a meat market. In 1900, he and his family lived in North Brookfield, MA. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, he and Mabel moved to Portland, ME, where they lived until his death. He died²⁴⁸⁹ of edema of the lungs and "dropsy" at the age of 53y 5m 27d.

J H Temple, in "Geneal Reg of North Brookfield Families²⁶⁹⁹" states that Mabel May, born Sep 15, 1867, daughter of Benjamin and Mary F Veazie, was adopted Dec 1, 1874, by Isaac Moulton May and his wife, Mary A F Rich. That coincides with the name change²⁷⁰² in North Brookfield, MA, on Dec 1, 1874, of Mabel Wallace Veazie to Mabel May. Also, the Worcester county probate index²⁷⁰³ lists an adoption of "Mabel W Veazie" in 1874. Note that there is no (apparent) birth record for a Mabel Wallace Veazie to Benjamin and Mary Veazie. There is, however, an entry in the North Brookfield birth register, in 1874 (note the date), for Mabel May, born Sep 15, 1867, by adoption, listing Isaac M and Mary (A Rick) May. That birthdate is the same as listed¹⁷⁹⁹ for Kate Ayers Veazie. See notes for Kate. There is no indication that either Mabel or Kate was born a twin and it seems probable that Mabel and Kate Veazie are the same reason, though the reason for changing her name from Kate to Mabel is not known. As many records list Mabel with maiden names Veazie and May, she is listed separately in this genealogy.

Following her adoption for the Mays in 1874, she appears in 1880 in the household of Isaac M and Mary A F May, in North Brookfield. Six years later, Mabel married²⁷⁰¹ Fred L Harding. By 1900, Fred and Mabel had had 5 children, only 4 of whom were living then. Their youngest child, Raymond, had died at the age of only 2 months. In 1910, Fred and Mabel still lived in Portland. Residing in their household were Chancy, Leo, Leo's new wife Ethel, and Hazel. In 1920, after Fred's death, Mabel was lodging in the household of Joseph Lamb in Portland. She was working in a furrier store.
