Locating records for Peter's parents is, at first, a bit difficult. Peter's Califronia death index527 entry lists his mother's maiden name as Chapman. Beverly (Lambert) Cantrill2779 provided his parents' full names, and stated that Peter's daughter, Anna Lura Keplinger, was named after Peter's sisters. With that information, and given Peter's birthplace, further records were located. E.g., in 1885, the family of Sarah Keplinger, age 80, born Tennessee and previously of Iowa, is located in Kansas. Among those listed in her household are: M., age 44, female, widow, b Mas? from Iowa; Peter, age 8, b Kans; Ann, age 11, b Kans; and Lura, age 7, born Kans. As a starting point, it is assumed that "M" is Peter's mother, and Sarah is Peter's grandmother. Confirmation for most of this is provided by the marriage certificate2782 for Anna K (Keplinger) Dias to Fred Redden. Anna's parents are listed as John H Keplinger and Melsana Chapman. Witnesses were C W and Lura E Leighton. Lura was the sister of Anna and Peter.
John Keplinger was born ~1844 in Illinois to Jacob and Sarah Keplinger, both born Tennessee. Both his parents are living in his household in 1870. Several records for John indicate a birthplace of Kansas. However, those records for which he or his parents are the likely informants indicate Illinois is correct.
Melsana is listed as M L in 1870; as "M" in 1875 and 1885. In 1880, she is enumerated as "Melsinee."
