Family of John James VEAZIE and Elizabeth (Bettie) BAYNE
John James VEAZIE b. 1848 Oct 224269 at Natchez, MS3082. d. 1922 Feb 114269 at Elkton, VA4269. bd. Elk Run Cem., Elkton, VA4269.
Elizabeth (Bettie) BAYNE b. 1851 May 183084 at St John's Parish, Prince George Co., MD3084.
Married2299 1889 Dec 162299 at District of Columbia, U.S.A.2299.
In addition, the funeral home records3082 for Rev. Henry Purcell Veazie list his parents as John James Veazie, born Natchez, MS, and Elizabeth "Boyne", born St George's Co., Maryland.
John's full name is listed on his death certificate4269, as well3040 as in The Percy Family genealogy, under James H and Mary Jane (Smith) Veazie.
John J's occupation isn't clear from the records. The Washington Post, Fri, Feb 2,1906 (newspaperarchive.com), mentions a Mr John J Veazie among the (several hundred) guests of President (Teddy) Roosevelt at a reception. The 1910 census3094 lists his occupation as a manufactuer of seed planters, as was his son-in-law C E Patric. John's death certificate has "retired bookkeeper."
John's gravestone840, in addition to birth and death dates which match his death certificiate, lists the following information: Married Aug 3, 1909; (beside his name) Cora V Veazie, b Sept 17, 1877, d Feb 8 1973; Their Children: Mary F, and Virigina C.
John married3081 second, Aug 3, 1909, in Rockingham Co., VA, the much younger Cora Virginia Coffman. John and Cora had two daughters, Mary Frances and Virginia C. In 1910, John J and Cora V Veazie, brother- and sister-in-law, are listed1910 in the household of (head) C E Patric and John's daughter, by his first wife, Mary J. Those census entries were enumerated in April. John and Cora are listed as married 7 months, which corresponds to their marriage in 1909.
John died4268 Feb 11, 1922, in Elkton, VA. The 1973 obituary3105 for (second) wife Cora (Coffman) Veazie (incorrectly) mentions that her husband John James Veazie died in August 1922. Perhaps the August date was confused with the month of marriage for John and Cora.
Elizabeth "Boyne" is listed3082 as the mother of Rev Henry Purcell Veazie, (she) born Prince George Co., Maryland, in funeral home records for Henry. She is also listed3037 as the mother (born Maryland) of Estelle Veazie (father John Veazie, b Mississippi). A "Mrs William Bayne" attended3086 the ordination of Elizabeth's son Henry Purcell Veazie in Baltimore, MD, Jun 11, 1920. On Jun 13, 1920, following the ordination, Rev Henry Purcell Veazie was a soloist3089 at St Stephen's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, and among those from Washington who attended the service was "Mrs William Bayne," an aunt of Rev Veazie. Though not conclusive, it may be that Elizabeth is the "Bettie Bayne" born3084 May 18, 1851, in St John's Parish, Prince Georges Co., MD, to William B and Elizabeth Bayne. In 1880, William and Betty Bayn are listed3088 as son and daughter of William Bayn, in Oxen Hill, MD. Oxen Hill is just south of Washington, DC. Son William's wife, "B. L. Bayn," may be the "Mrs William Bayne" mentioned in the articles above.
Child 2. Estelle
Estelle's middle name is given in a wedding article3083, which states Mary Jane Veazie "was attended by her niece, Miss Estelle Bayne Veazie.." Other information comes from her death index3037 listing. Her obituary3077 states she was a step-daughter of Mrs. Cora Veazie, that Estelle died of typhoid fever, that she was the daughter of the late John M(sic) Veazie, and left surviving her a brother, Rev Percy Veazie, of Washington, and two half sisters, Mary Frances and Virginia Veazie.
