In 1850, Hollis, age 6/12, resided5068 with his parents and siblings in Rollin, Michigan. In 1870, Hollis, age 20, resided5067 with his parents in Madison, Iowa.
Hollis' middle initiail is listed in the 1885 census for Waverly, IA, as well as in his biorgraphy1059. That biorgraphy mentions that Hollis' parents moved to Manchester, Iowa, in 1856, later removing to a farm near Auroa. His father died there. His mother then moved to Waverly and lived with her daughter (Mrs Sheldon) until her death.
Hollis was educated in Manchester. He moved to Waverly at the age of 21 and worked in general mercantile. The Manchester (IA) Democrat-Radio, Dec 18, 1918, in a "Forty Years Ago (Dec 18, 1878)" column, reported that "Mr Hollis Houghton" had moved to Waverly to make his home. He then began buying and selling livestock, selling them in Chicago and New York. He made investments in land and farming property and brought himself a good measure of success. He was active in the stock business until his death.
He married twice: first to Eva Matteson. Following Eva's 1894 death, he married in 1904, Clarissa Millette, daughter of Caleb and Alma (Salsbury) Millette, of New York state.
