Fred was a painter. Apparently Frederick and his first wife, Clara Waterman, were divorced between 1892 and 1898, as Clara appears in the 1892 census⁴⁷⁴⁵ with Frederick and family, and Frederick married¹⁸⁶⁰ Margaret Haley in 1898.

Following Frederick's death, Margaret may have married⁴⁷⁹⁰ Ralph A Lehner. The November, 1905, wedding announcement states that Mrs Margaret Haley Hayden of Utica, formerly of Rome, would marry Ralph A Lehner of Utica "early in December." Conflicting with that announcement, a marriage license¹⁷²⁸ for Frank J Cole and Margaret Hayden (nee Haley) was sworn to June 19, 1909, in Utica, NY. That license application lists Margaret as age 39, born in Rome, NY, to James and Marcella (Craven) Haley. The application also states that it would be the second marriage for Margaret; her former husband was dead; she was not previously divorced.
