Charles committed suicide1774 by hanging at his home. His wife Mrs Bessie R Hobart was the informant for his death certificate. At the time of his death, he was a clerk at the Custom House. The Boston (MA) Daily Globe, May 14, 1895, reported that Charles A Hobart was chosen from the civil service list to fill one of two positions at the Boston custom house which were vacated when two clerks got into an altercation during business hours and were dismissed from the service. Around 1910, he began to suffer from nervous prostration4139 and became despondent about his ill health. His work suffered and he went on a leave of absence from his job as customs clerk around Christmas of 1912. On the morning of Apr 30, 1913, he rose to start the kitchen fire. Sometime later, concerned that she heard no activity, his wife went to the cellar and found her husband hanging from a rafter. She cut the rope and ran for a doctor, but attempts to revive him were futile.
Charles was a graduate of Quincy High School, and a member of the I. O. O. F. Wollaston Lodge.
