Family of Samuel JONES and Rachel NORVELL

Samuel JONES b. 1788 Jul 27797. d. 1826 Mar 5797 at Cornwall, Orange Co., NY797. bd. Vails Gate Cem., Orange Co., NY840.
Rachel NORVELL b. 1791 Nov 12797 at Cornwall, Orange Co., NY797. d. 1869 Feb 185610 at Cornwall, Orange Co., NY5610. bd. Vails Gate Cem., Orange Co., NY840.

Married797 1812 Nov 1797 at Cornwall, Orange Co., NY797.

A memorial stone840 in Vails Gate Cem., Orange Co., NY, reads (from the image): "IN / memory of / Samuel Jones / who died / March 5 1826 / in the 3[7?] year / of his age."

Earle McGowan5543, citing verbal and written information5546 from Mrs John L Hubbard (nee Ellen Jones, dau of Charles Henry Jones, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY), and his 1924 examination of tombstones in the churchyard of the M. E. church in Vail's Gate, NY, has: Rachael Adrian wife of Samuel Jones born Nov 12, 1791, and died Feb 18, 1864. Also, New Windsor Town Historian, Carol B Bates: death Feb 18, 1869. McGowan notes that New Windsor is now Orrs Mills, Orange Co., NY.

Donermeyer797 has Samuel Jones' wife as Rachel Norvell, dau of George Norvell and Jane Southerland.

The children of Samuel Jones and his wife Rachel are based on a list of children5546 in what Earle McGowan describes as "Rachael Adrian Jones Bible," provided to him by Ellen (Jones) Hubbard, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, in a letter dated Oct 14, 1965. The order of birth of the children isn't provided.

In the 1825 State Census for Cornwall, Orange Co., NY (familysearch.org, FHL film #007902332, img 100}, a Samuel Jones is listed with a household comprising a total of 6 males and 3 females; 1 male subject to militia duty between 18 and 45 years old; 1 male qualified to vote; 1 married female under the age of 45; 2 unmarried females less than 16 years; 1 male born in the preceding year; 14 acres of improved land; 5 cattle; 6 sheep; 3 hogs; and 12 yards of cloth.

The 6 males are accounted for, being Samuel himself, and 5 sons. Assuming that Samuel's wife Rachel is one of the 3 females, and knowing Mary Jones was born in 1818, the implication is that one of the daughters, Louisa (either one) or Ann, was born during or after 1825. === Rachel Jones' maiden name ===

Earle McGowan references5546 an "Adrian Jones" Bible for Rachel's maiden name. Donermeyer797 has "Norvell" without reference, and has the parents of Rachel Norvell as George Norvell and Jane Southerland. However, it should be noted that the surname Adrian (or similar) does not appear in the 1825 or 1835 New York state censuses for Cornwall, New York.

The 1790 census5611 for New Cornwall lists a George Norvel, and the 1810 census5612 lists Jane Norval.

A will5846 by Jane Norvell, "of the town of Cornwall, County of Orange," New York, signed May 30, 1829, mentions (among other relations) daughters Sarah Sargent and Rachel Jones. That will bequeaths to Jane's son William a lot adjoining a lot belonging to Letita More. The will also mentions Rachel's daughters: Mary, Louis[a], and Ann; and Rachel's sons David and Walter.

The will5845 for David Southerland, of Cornwall, Orange county, New York, mentions, among others, daughter "Latissha Moor, wife of William Moor," daughter Jane "Norvill, wife of George Norvill," and daughter Sarah. Of particular note, David bequeathed to daughter Jane Norvill land between land given to Latissha and land sold to his son William.

An obituary5610, published Feb 19, 1864, in the Newburgh (NY) Daily Journal reads, in part: "Cornwall 2-19 1864. We … record the death of two aged sisters of our place Rachel Jones and Sarah Sargent. Mrs Jones was aged about seventy … Mrs Jones died yesterday and will be buried … at the Methodist Church, New Windsor." The cemetery of the Methodist Church in Orange County, New York, is elsewhere identified as Vails Gate Methodist Cemetery. A headstone840 in Vails Gate Cem., Orange Co., NY, reads (from the image): "Rachel / Wife of / Samuel Jones / Born --- 12, 1791 / Died / ---18, 186[4?]" Though the inscription is faint, it does not appear to be in conflict with Feb 18, 1864, the death date mentioned in the obituary for Rachel Jones, sister of Sarah Sargent.

Considering the above information, and, as yet, having found no indication of the surname Adrian in that area, it appears to be almost a certainty that Rachel Jones, the wife of Samuel Jones, is the sister of Sarah (Norvell) Sargent, and the daughter of Jane Norvell, nee Southerland, and George Norvell. =====

Rachel is likely the Rachel Jones in the 1850 census5544 for Cornwall, NY, age 58, born New York. Residing with her were David S Jones, age 36, laborer, b NY, and Edward Jones, age 25, shoemaker, b NY.

If she is the Rachel Jones in the 1850 census5544, she is certainly the Rachel Jones, age 63, b Orange County, widow, resident 63 years, in the 1855 census5545 for Cornwall, NY, with son David Jones, age 41, born Orange County, farmer.

Child 1. David

In 1850 and 1855, David is listed5544 5545 in the household of Rachel Jones. He may be the David Jones, age 54, brother of Charles W Jones, in Charles' household5547 in Cornwall, NY, in 1865.

The headstone840 for David S Jones, Community Cemetery, Monroe, Orange County, NY, reads: "David S Jones / Born Aug 1 1813 / Died / Apr 26 1878 / Gone but not forgotten."

A legal notice (Newburgh, NY, Daily Register, Nov 28, 1879), mentions that decrees for settlement had been entered for David S Jones, late of the town of Monroe, Edward C Jones, administrator. His death date is assumed from that information.

Child 2. Louisa (first of the name)

McGowan5543, referencing a letter from Ellen (Jones) Hubbard, has "Lewisa" drowned at Chester, NY, August 13th, 1817 while the family was visiting relatives.

Child 3. Joseph

The headstone840 for Joseph Jones, Vails Gate Cem., Orange Co., NY, reads: "In memory of / Joseph / son of Samuel & / Rachel Jones / who died / Jan 30, 1843 / AE 26 y's 7 mo / & 9 d's." His birth date is calculated from that information.

Child 5. Louisa

The headstone840 for Louisa Jones, Vails Gate Cemetery, Orange Co., NY, reads: "In / memory of / Louisa / daughter of / Samuel & Rachel / Jones / who died / March 24, 1838 / aged 18 years / & 5 months." She is assumed to be the second of the name in the list of Samuel Jones' children. Her birth date is assumed from that information. Donermeyer797 has birth Oct 27, 1819.

Child 7. Charles

A memorial page840 for Charles W Jones, Cornwall Baptist Cem., Cornwall, NY, (no image of headstone) has Charles W Jones, born 30 Oct 1825, died Mar 1878, aged 52. Recorded here for further research.

Child 8. Edward

In 1850, Edward is listed5544 in the household of Rachel Jones.

The headstone840 for Edward C Jones, Community Cem., Monroe, NY, reads: "Edward C Jones / Born / Aug 8, 1824 / Died Nov 2, 1891 / Sarah S Smith / His Wife / Born Dec 31, 1833." A death date for Sarah isn't present on the stone.
