Cha(u)ncy Hulse was reared on his father's farm, and, after a fair education, worked as a clerk in a store. At 17, he was apprenticed to a watch-case manufacturer for four and a half years. He then worked in New City City for ten years, before settling I Washingtonville, where he resided until 1866. He moved to Goshen and purchased a jewelry business, which he and his son (Lewis) operated as C Hulse & Son, until his death.

In 1884, he and his son began dealing in wagons and carriages as the Hulse Wagon Company, located on West Main and High streets. Hulse also served as Trustee of the village board.

He had two children by Susan Jane McKinney, his first wife: Lewis W and Susie.
