McGowan5728 has William Gage born Aug 20, 1770, Freetown, Mass. However, in a typewritten monograph, Clyde Gage5729 has William's older brother, Benjamin, born 4/19/1762 in Nine Partners, Dutchess County, NY, and census records for William Gage have his birth place indicated as New York. In both the 1855 census5646 and 1865 census5725 for Knox, Albany Co., NY, William Gage appears in the household and as the father (so listed) of Hiram Gage; in both records, William is listed as born in Dutchess Co., NY.
Gage5729 has the death date of William Gage as Jan 18, 1865. However, the 1865 census mentioned in which William appears was enumerated June 16, 1865. In addition, the ages listed for William Gage in various censuses indicate a birth year of 1772 is more likely. A monument840, Lee Church, Knox, NY, lists "1772 - William Gage - 1865." From those pieces of information, and considering contradictory information, it is assumed that McGowan and Gage were both likely in error on some points, and William was born about 1772 in Dutchess County, NY. It should be noted that, unfortunately, neither McGowan nor Gage provide sources for their information.
In the 1865 census5725 for Knox, NY, enumerated 16th June, William Gage, father of Hiram Gage, is listed as age 93 or 95 (the age is indistinct), and the father of 12.
