Earle McGowan family history.
McGowan5579 provides that an epidemic of typhoid fever wiped out scores of residents of the Township of Big Flats in the years of 1857 and 1858. Among them were Elijah Delaney and wife Hannah. After the death of her parents,Elizabeth Delaney was adopted by a family by the name of Hathaway. As near as can be determined their names were Pat and Sophia. Mr Hathaway was a canal boat owner.
McGowan{super 5579} notes that the 1855 state census5578 indicates that Elijah, wife Hannah, and children George and Frank had resided in the township 7 years (since 1848). In that census, George, age 9, is listed as born in Steuben Co., and Frank (age 7) and Elizabeth (age 5), was born in Chemung county.
McGowan5579 has that Hannah was born about 1800 and died approximately 1886, probably in Big Flats township. Below he states her death date as June 26, 1857. Her death date is confirmed from headstone information5580

In 1865, Fannie, listed as "niece," resided3326 with her aunt, Mary A (Delaney) Barrett, in the household of Warren Barrett.
Child 6. Emma
In 1855, an Emma Delaney, age 5, b NY, resided3005 in the household of John and Lorinda Van Tastle in Big Flats, NY. In the same household were Elizabeth Delaney (age 69, b NJ), and John F Delaney (age 18, b NY). It is assumed that Lorinda Van Tastle was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Delany. From Emma's age, and her appearance with the others in that enumeration, it is assumed that she was the daughter of Elijah and Hannah Delany.
