Fields Coombs married first549 Phebe Holbrook, the daughter of Capt. Jesse and Ruth (Dyer) Holbrook. Phebe died5443 Jan 9, 1800.
In 1800, Fields Sr was age 26-44, having emigrated317 from Brunswick. Ten years later546, in 1810, he was 45 or older, so he was 35 or older in 1800 for a birthdate range of 1756 to 1765.
Groves5443, p 25, "Field Coombs his children," and "Fields Coombres[sic] Children," lists a total of 14 children. The former list comprises 8 children, apparently by his first wife, Phebe Holbrook.The latter list comprises 6 children, assumed to be by his second wife, Martha Veazie. Only 2 of the children of Fields and Phebe are shown herein (those that married Veazies.)
As Fields Coombs doesn't seem to appear in the 1840 census, though that's not conclusive, he probably died prior to that year.
Bangor Hist. Mag.388, p 74, has, among the children of Samuel Veazie and Phebe Holbrook, "probably not in order," listed as child iii.: Martha b ---, married Fields Coombs, of Islesboro, about 1801. His second wife had six children - Lucy, Louisiana, Samson, Thatcher, Hosea and Jairus. The "second wife" reference is due to the prior marriage of Fields Coombs to Phebe Holbrook. Phebe died5443 in 1800.
In a compelling analysis, Hillman800, considering probable age ranges in census records, aprroximate and exact marriage dates for her mother, and children of Samuel Veazie, concludes that Martha must have been the eldest of his daughters, and eldest of all his children. Some of that analysis follows to approximate Martha's birth date.
In 1820, a female 45 and older is listed in Fields Coombs' household and, therefore, 35 or older in 1810. In 1810, a female 26 to 44 yrs of age is listed. If both of these are Martha, she was born between 1766 and 1775. Martha's birthyear is an approximation of this information, and the birthdates of her siblings. Her birthplace is assumed from the likely location of her father in the mid-1770s.
Neither Fields Coombs or Martha Coombs seems to appear in the 1840 census. It is assumed Martha died prior to the census.
