James and Matilda, having married quite late in life, apparently had no children.

The ages for all family members match the 1820 census for Reading correctly. The ages for all family members match the 1830 census for Barrington correctly, if the census was taken after Hiram's birth in May, and taking into account that Polly died in 1826. The 1840 census (Bradford) includes a male, age 70 to 80 years. The 1855 census lists Hiram born in 1830 in Yates county.

James was apparently a farmer his whole life.

In the 1865 census, James, age 66, still farming, is listed as having 8 children and widowed. The 1870 census lists with him Matilda, his second wife. The date of his marriage to her is a guess.

The headstones of James, Matilda and Cornelia are grouped in that order, right-to-left.

Cornelia's exact birth year is in some small doubt. Her granddaughter Hyla Barkley's family list654 has a birthdate of Dec 18, 1798. The 1865 NY census has Cornelia Barkley, age 68, female, white, married, died on Mar 6 (1864), born in Ulster (county, NY), cause of death as typhoid fever. Cornelia's headstone, as examined by the author, reads: "Cornelia, wife of James Barkley Died Mar 6 186(?) Aged 65 years." The stone when read was very weathered.

Her ages given in the censuses in which they appear imply birth years of 1797 through 1799. 1798 is indicated herein as perhaps being the closest.

Betsey's headstone has d 3 May 1852 ae 19y 8m 28d, which implies a birthdate of 5 Jun 1832, versus 5 Aug listed by Hyla Barkley Veazie.
