Family of James BARKLEY and Mary MOFFAT

James BARKLEY b. 1714 (guess). d. 1796 May~1359 at prob Montgomery, (then) Ulster County, New York1359.
Mary MOFFAT b. 1720 (guess) at prob Ulster Co., NY2536. d. after Oct 1789.

Married655 1739~. James and Mary's date of marriage is estimated from the estimated date of birth of their oldest child.

According to Moffat655, James Barkley came from Dublin, Ireland, with the "Clinton Party" on the ship George and Ann which landed at Cape Cod, 4 October, 1729. James migrated to New York City, Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and settled in (what is now) Orange Co., New York.

Dates indicated as "(guess)" are just that - estimated dates based on assumptions such as an appropriate age when an individual might marry and have children, etc. Some estimates are based on known dates for descendants, working "backwards" to a progenitor. For instance, James birth date is estimated to be ~25 years before the birth of his oldest child. In this case, daughter Mary's birthdate is itself a guess of ~2 years prior to son Samuel's birth (given by Moffat).

As Moffat is such a valuable resource, to help simplify identification of the many Barclay/Barkley names, many individuals have been "marked" with the numbers Moffat assigned655 in his genealogy - e.g., "Jane (m104)." In many Barclay/Barkley families herein, the order of children is as Moffat recorded.

James signed his will1359 with "+ his mark" 27 Oct 1789. He bequeathed the lot land (82 acres) where he lived, between the land of son Samuel and Samuel Miller, to his son Samuel. His son James and daughter Margaret Sears were each bequeathed $30. The remainder of his personal estate was to be divided among his children: Samuel Barkley, James Barkley, Thomas Barkley and Margaret Sears, after his wife decease. His wife Mary was to live with his son Samuel or daughter Margaret Sears. He appointed sons Samuel and James executors. The will was witnessed by Gideon Pelton, Marget "m her mark" Sears and John Nicholson.

The will was proved 3 May 1796 and sealed 10 May 1796. It is assumed he died a few days earlier than the proof (probate) date.

Note that sons John and William are not mentioned in father James' will, and it is assumed that they died prior to his signing. For some others, lacking other information, dates of death for those mentioned in his will are assumed to be after the signing date.

Children of James and Mary (Moffat) Barkley mentioned by Moffat are as indicated. Reynolds2536 mentions the same children in Moffat's order, except sons mentioned first, daughters Mary and Margaret mentioned second.

Mary Moffat was the daughter2536 of William Moffat, himself the son of Samuel Moffat of Ayrshire, Scotland. The wife of William Moffat isn't mentioned. William, born prob Ireland, immigrated to New Jersey "at an early date," married and had children: 1. Samuel, 2. Thomas, 3. William, 4. Mary (who married James Barkley), and 5. John. Mary (Moffat), wife of James Barkley, is mentioned in her husband James' will1359 27 Oct 1789. It is assumed she died after that date.
