Family of Lewis Rose MCGOWAN and Elizabeth Ann WILLIAMSON

Lewis Rose MCGOWAN b. 1857 Jun 265532 at Mount Washington area, Steuben Co., NY5614. d. 1914 Feb 126064 at at home, 51 Platt st., Hornell, NY6064. bd. Rural Cem., Hornell, NY5599.
Elizabeth Ann WILLIAMSON b. 1872 Jul 26797 at West Cameron, NY797. d. 1937 Jun 25797 at Coopers Plains, NY797. bd. Rural Cem., Hornell, NY840.

Married797 1891 Apr 25866 at West Cameron, NY5866. In a somewhat humerous exchange, the Hammondsport Herald, Mar 25, 1891, stated that Lewis R McGowan had chided5865 a newspaper reporter for reporting his marriage, that the report was wholly without foundation, stating that the correspondent must be pretty hard up for news to have resorted to such "rot" for the item. A week and a half later, Apr 8, 1891, the same newspaper reported5866 that the premature announcement of Lewis McGowan and Libbie A Williamson had caused a ripple of excitement among the many friends of the couple. Then the event actually took place "Thursday last" at the home of the bride's parents in West Cameron, the Rev John Segwalt presiding.

The McGowan Bible5532 has this son of William and Mary McGowan only as "Lewis." Lewis McGowan's grandson, Earle McGowan5614 has birth place "in area called Mt Washington." That general area (present day) is north of Savona, to the northeast of Bath, and south of Hammondsport, in Steuben County, NY. That is consistent with the 1860 residence5535 of Lewis' family.

In the census records for 1860, 1865, 1870, and 1875, Lewis was enumerated in the household of William and Mary McGowan. In 1880, following his father's death, he resided5550 with his mother, Mary, and brothers Samuel J and Frank "McGowen," near Urbana, just north of Hammondsport on the western shore of Keuka Lake.

An announcement of the marriage of Lewis and "Miss Libbie A Williamson," in the middle of March, 1891, caused a bit of a stir in his family. That announcement was premature by some two weeks, and they were, in fact, married5866 April 2, in West Cameron, NY, at the home of Libbie's parents.

Following their marriage in 1891, Lewis and Libbie McGowan were enumerated in 18921091 and 19001126 in Urbana. Lewis' occupation was "vineyardist" (1892) and "farmer" (1900).

In 1905, "Louis" McGowan and family resided1183 at 20 Seneca St in Hornell. Louis is listed as a clerk in a pool room. In 1910, Lewis worked1177 as a porter at a railroad station.

Lewis died6064 at home in Hornell, NY, age 57, after a lingering illness. Surviving him were his wife and four children, viz., Ray, Lewis(sic) and Millicent (all of Hornell), and Earl(sic) of Corning.

In information passed down through the family by Earle McGowan, Lewis disliked his middle name, consider it effeminate. Further, he preferred short names which had no nickname. As a result, he named his sons Ray (not Raymond), Earle and Lynn. When his first daughter was born, Lewis wanted her to be named Mary, after his own mother. Wife Libbie wanted her named after her step-mother, Millicent (Robbins.) They compromised and named her Mary Millicent. Lewis insisted she be called Millie. It was until Millie's marriage in 1922 that she learned her first name was Mary.

Elizabeth Ann Williamson is listed1728 as Earle McGowan's mother in the record of Earle McGowan's marriage to Hazel Vera Stevens. In 1900, "Libbie" A McGowan, born Jul 1872, New York, appears1126 as the wife of Lewis R McGowan. In 18755592, at age 3, and 18805613, at age 8, "Libbie" Williamson appears as the daughter of David L and Mahala Williamson.
