At the age of 8 years, Arthur was struck by a car⁴³⁶⁰ when he ran across Main Street (Savona, NY), and was seriously injured. The driver of the car, Elmer Smith of Towlesville, picked him up and carried him to the close-by house of his grandparents, Mr and Mrs A D Gilmore. He was soon thereafter taken to a hospital where he remained totally unconscious for several hours. It was thought his skull may have been broken and diagnosis had to wait until his condition permitted x-rays.

Arthur was promoted to the rank of Corporal in Italy, according to a report (Corning NY Leader, Jun 26, 1944, fultonhistory.com) received by his parents. Barkley was a ground mechanic in the Army Air Corp at the time.
