At the age of 8 years, Arthur was struck by a car4360 when he ran across Main Street (Savona, NY), and was seriously injured. The driver of the car, Elmer Smith of Towlesville, picked him up and carried him to the close-by house of his grandparents, Mr and Mrs A D Gilmore. He was soon thereafter taken to a hospital where he remained totally unconscious for several hours. It was thought his skull may have been broken and diagnosis had to wait until his condition permitted x-rays.
