JAMES SEWELL was born Jun 1820 in New Brunswick, Canada^a. He died 21 Mar 1901, age 81^b, in Caton, Steuben Co., New York. In Corinna, Maine, on 23 Mar 1848, a bann was published^c, and a marriage certificate issued 21 Mar 1848^c for James Sewall and Miss Mary J. Veasie, both of Corinna. MARY JANE VEAZIE was born 17 Oct 1820^c, prob in Corinna, Penobscot Co., Maine. She died 27 Feb 1875, age 51 years, 3 months^d, probably in Elmira^e, Chemung Co., New York. She is buried in Elmwood Cemetery^d in Caton.

Shortly after their marriage^f, James and Mary Jane were living with Mary Jane's uncle ISAAC VEAZIE and his son ALVIN VEAZIE in Corinna. A few years later^g, James and Mary Jane emigrated^g to Caton, Steuben Co., New York, along with James' brother DOMINICUS SEWELL and Dominicus' wife MARTHA H. VEAZIE (Mary Jane's sister), STEPHEN VEAZIE, SR. (Mary Jane and Martha's father), STEPHEN VEAZIE, JR. and his wife SARAH FOLSOM, ALDEN VEAZIE and his wife ELIZABETH LORD, and all their families.

For a while in Caton, James was a farmer^h; but, for the majority of his life, he repaired clocks for a living^a,e,f,i. Between 1860^h and 1870^e, James, Mary Jane and their son Charles moved to Elmira. Following Mary Jane's death, James and Charles moved back to Catonⁱ and lived with James' brother Dominicus. Following Charles' death, James lived in Caton^a, probably until his death, in the home of Stephen Jr.'s widowed wife Sarah, her widowed son Melvin and Melvin's son George.
