Family of Rufus Clark ALKINS and Clarissa MCGOWAN

Rufus Clark ALKINS b. 1830 Jul6032 at Columbia Co., NY5555. d. 1911 Apr 74989 at 2210 N Hope St, Philadelphia, PA4989. bd. North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA4989.
Clarissa MCGOWAN b. 1830 Jan6032 at New Paltz, Ulster Co., NY797. d. 1911 Oct 214989 at Philadelphia, PA4989. bd. North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA4989.

Married5555 1854~6032. In 1855, Rufus C Alkins (age 24), and wife Clarissa Alkins (age 24), resided5555 in the same house as Clarissa Magowen (age 68) in Stockport, NY. In the 1900 census6032 Clark and Clarassey Alkins are listed as married 46 years.

Both Donermeyer797 and McGowan5615 have Rufus' surname as "Atkins." However, in records cited by this author, he appears as "Alkins."

In the 1850 census, Clark Alkins, age 18, is listed5554 in the household of Lloyd and Christina Alkins in Stockport. As Clark's age is approximately the same, and Clark appears in Columbia county, the parents for Rufus Clarke Alkins are assumed from that information.

In 1855, Rufus C Alkins was a carpenter5555; in 18601266, he was a seaman; in 18655604, a soldier.

In 1870, it appears that the family of Clark Alkins was enumerated2279 twice, both Dist 73, Ward 23 - first on 25 June, Dist 75, Ward 23, as Clark Alkins (age 39?), Theresa? (age 38?), Therese A (age 13), and George (age 9). The second time on Nov 17, as Clark Alkin (age 45), Clarency? (age 40), Clarency? (age 12), and George (age 10). The Jun 25 enumeration lists Clark as a watchman.

In the cited 1870 census, enumerated 25 June, residing in the household of Clark and Clarissa Alkins were Jane McCard and children. Jane McCard was Jane Phoebe McGowan, Clarissa's sister.

In 1880, Clark, Clarissa (wife), and Geo Edmund (son), resided4877 at 2029 Emerald St, Philadelphia. Clark's occupation was watchman.

Clark Alkins was registered6036 as a Navy Invalid for his service as: "Ord Seaman, U.S.S. Octorara, and Sebago and Pt. F. 2 N.Y. Vet. Cav." Clark's death date (4/7/11) is listed on that certificate. Following Clark's death, Clarissa Alkins was listed6036 as a Navy Widow for the service of Clark Alkins - Ord'y Seaman "Octorora" & "Sebago." That certificate lists Clarissa's death date "10/21/11."

Clark died4989 of "La Grippe," contributed to by bronchitis. The informant for personal information on that certificate was George G Scher(?), 2099 E Susquehanna. Although that certificate lists his birth as Sep 17, 1829, the birth place is given only as "U.S." and his father as "Rufus Clark Alkins, (born) U.S." Because of the apparent error in identifying Clark's father, and not knowing the birth places, it appears the informant may not have known Clark well. For that reason, Clark's birth date (July 1830) from the 1900 census6032 is preferred.

Clarrisa (McGowan) Alkins died4989 Oct 21, 1911, at 403 W Cumberland St, Philadelphia, PA. She died of arterio sclerosis and general paralysis. Her death certificate lists her parents as James McGowan, b Ireland, and Clarissa Lockwood, b NY. Mary Agnes Clarke (same address as place of death) was the informant for the certificate.

In 1850, Clarissa McGowan, age 20, resided5554 in the household of her mother, Clarrissa, along with her sister Phoebe J McGowan. In 1855, Rufus C Alkins and his wife, Clarissa (age 24, born in Ulster Co.,) resided5555 in the same house with Clarissa's mother Clarissa Magowen, and sister Jane P Magowen.

In the 1900 census6032 for Philadelphia, Clarassey, wife of Clark Alkins, is listed as the mother of 6, 0 living.

Residing with Clark and "Clarassey" Alkins in that 1900 record6032 was George [Alkins], "g'son," b Mar 1883. Also residing in the household were Emma Vandergrift, Albert Vandergrift and two boarders: Carrie and Fulmer Rush.

Clarisa Alkins died6031 Oct 21, 1911, age 82, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
