Family of James MCGOWAN and Clarissa LOCKWOOD

James MCGOWAN b. 1790~797 at Ireland4989.
Clarissa LOCKWOOD b. 1790~5554 at Westchester Co., NY5555. d. aft 18601266.

Married797 1810~797.

The primary starting points for the family of James McGowan and Clarissa Lockwood are the death certificates for Elizabeth Ferris and Clarissa Alkins.

The death certificate5569 (verified transcript) for Elizabeth Ferris, who died Oct 27, 1900, age 88, in Cold Spring, Putnam county, New York, lists her parents as "Jas. Macgowen" and "Claris Lockwood." The informant for Elizabeth's parents is not indicated.

The death certificate4989 for Clarisa Alkins, who died Oct 21, 1911, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, age 81y 10m 21d (born Jan 1, 1830), lists her parents as "James Mac Gowan," born Ireland, and Clarisa Lockwood, born New York. The informant for that information was Mary A Clarke, elsewhere identified as the daughter4989 of Jane McGowan and James McCard.

In an 1815 record of the proceedings6058 of the Board of Supervisors, Westchester County, New York, p. 232, is a list of persons paid for services to the county. Among them is: "James McGowan, Mamaroneck … 4 68." A James "Mc Gown" appears6053 in the 1820 census for Mamaroneck, NY.

At present, there is only circumstantial evidence that James and Clarisa (Lockwood) McGowan are the parents of all the children listed herein. As that evidence varies significantly from child to child, that evidence (or lack thereof) is presented in the profile for each child.

In 1850, Clarissa McGowan (age 60) resided5554 in Stockport, NY. In her household were Clarissa (age 20) and Phoebe J (age 15). In 1855, Clarissa "Magowen" (age 68), born Westchester (county) and widow, resided in Stockport, NY, with child Jane P, age 20, born Dutchess (county). Residing in the same house were Rufus C Alkins, and his wife, Clarissa Alkins (age 24), born Ulster (county).

Child 1. James

Of this child James McGowan, McGowan5579 has only information from his uncle Frank McGowan, "as he remembered," Oct 4, 1924: "James - Got into some trouble or disgrace & went west in 1830. Never heard from again." James being the oldest of the children is merely an assumption, and his birth date and place are just guesses based on dates and places for other children.

Child 7. Matthew

There is, at present, no direct documentation that Matthew McGowan was the son of James and Clarisa (Lockwood) McGowan. There is, however, substantial corroboration that Matthew was the brother of William McGowan from direct and shared DNA matches between descendants of Matthew's daughters Dora (McGowan) Gannon and Addie (McGowan) Beam, and several descendants of William McGowan.

Of Matthew McGowan, McGowan5615 has only "Lived in Conn." Donermeyer797 has only Matthew died "July 31, 1868, Freetown, Bristol, MA." The latter information is likely taken from the death record3272 for "Mathew" McGowen, recorded as died that date and place. That record also gives his age at death as 43, his marital status as single, occupation as laborer, cause of death as heart disease, birthplace as NY, place of interment as Freetown, Mass. There appears to be no indication of a Matthew McGowan of an appropriate age living in Connecticut in the 1800s. Other than DNA matches mentioned above, there is, at present, no documented indication of a Matthew McGowan being a son of James McGowan, or sibling to the McGowans of this genealogy.

Child 8. Edward

This Edward McGowan was almost certainly the son of James and Clarisa (Lockwood) McGowan. In 1860, Edward McGowan, age 31, appears1266 in the household of Clarke and Clarissa Alkens, listed immediately below Clarissa McGowan, age 72. His surname is indicated by a ditto mark, which often indicates a relationship, rather than just the same surname. As Clarisa Alkins is elsewhere identified as Clarisa McGowan, dau of James and Clarisa McGowan, the above information indicates, almost a certainty, that Edward is also the son of James and Clarisa McGowan. The 1860 census lists his occupation as "Printer," and a personal value of $100.

Regarding Edward McGowan, Donermeyer797 has only birth about 1826. McGowan5615 has only "Died Phila Pa."

Perhaps a coincidence, Robert McGowan (possibly his brother?) is listed in 1860 as a printer. The city directory for Brooklyn, NY, 1888-1889, lists an Edward McGowan, adr 84 Dean, as a lithographer.

Of Edward McGowan, McGowan5615 has only "Died Phila. Pa." No further information.
