Family of Nathaniel MCGOWAN and Amanda (w of Nathaniel) MCGOWAN

Nathaniel MCGOWAN b. 1822~5557 at New York5562. d. 1849 Aug 295628 at Camptown, Clinton Twp, Essex Co., NJ5628.
Amanda (w of Nathaniel) MCGOWAN b. 1827~5559 at Pennsylvania5559.

Married5559 1846~. As mentioned below, this marriage is an assumption based on (at present) circumstantial evidence and possible DNA matches. The marriage date is based on a guess from the age of Stacy McGowan, age 3, a male child in the household5559 of Amanda McGowan in the 1850 census for Brooklyn, NY.

At present, there is no direct evidence that Nathaniel McGowan was the son of James and Clarisa (Lockwood) McGowan. Possible corroboration is the name of Nathaniel's daughter Eleanor Clarissa McGowan. There is substantial corroboration that Nathaniel was the brother of William McGowan from direct and shared DNA matches between several descendants of Nathaniel McGowan's daughter Eleanor (McGowan) Gorman and several descendants of William McGowan.

The Donermeyer information797 regarding Nathaniel, i.e., that he was born about 1821, and died in August, 1849, in New Jersey, likely came from the 1850 census mortality schedule5557 for Township of Clinton, Essex Co., New Jersey, which lists Nathaniel McGowan, age 28, born New York, died August [1849] of cholera, a shoemaker. An almost identical mortality schedule entry for Nathaniel McGowan also appears5562 with the 1850 census for Brooklyn, New York, in the 5th ward. His age in that entry is reported as 25; the rest of information is the same. The New York report may be significant as the 1850 census5559 for the 5th ward in Brooklyn has a family consisting of Amanda McGowan, age 23, born in Pennsylvania, and two children: Stacy, male, age 3, born New Jersey; and Eleanor, age 1, female, also born in New Jersey. In correspondence5558, a descendant of Eleanor McGowan born ~1849 provides that the New York City death certificate for Eleanor (McGowan) Gorman lists her father as Nathaniel McGowan (mother unknown). That correspondent also has DNA matches with several descendants of William McGowan (prob. brother of this Nathaniel McGowan), indicating a relationship in the range 4th to 6th cousin. The relationship between that correspondent and Bruce Veazie is, by the McGowan genealogy noted herein, a 4th-cousin-once-removed.

For the reasons above, and for the purpose of providing clues for further research, Nathaniel's wife is assumed to be the Amanda McGowan of the 1850 New York census for Brooklyn, and their descendants as noted.

DNA matches: several descendants of William McGowan (prob. brother of Nathaniel McGowan) have DNA matches with descendants of the Amanda McGowan mentioned above. The matches indicate a relationship in the range 4th to 6th cousin.
